Topic > Why I choose industrial engineering for my degree

The way the invention of the wheel simplified the quintessential essence of life; allowing us a broader approach in unraveling the external world unknown to civilization, the way we approach the number “0” which helps us unravel the unquantified modus operandi of its applicability in scientific research, and the way cryptocurrency is shaping the future as a digital currency created in a unique way to function without any assistance from an individual made me reconsider my abilities in finding new ways to decipher the meaning of life which made me push myself harder in every single aspect of life in an attempt to bring to light advanced approaches to solving complex systems. Since I assume that knowledge itself is nothing more than the application of useful knowledge, now this is powerful and could benefit someone: This is the ultimate intent that made me look into a wide range of topics that pointed me towards the ideology of choice in Industrial Engineering in my undergraduate course. From day one I have always been intrigued by how a process or approach itself is interconnected at its core in defining a new outcome that would minimize the possibility of errors and result in a better testimony in itself. I firmly believe that industrial engineering alone has enormous potential in decoding an ocean of complications to create a path to smooth sailing. All of these courses motivated me to pursue an internship in the manufacturing industry. During my summer internship at "Bhilai Steel Plant" which is the oldest steel manufacturing industry and India's first and leading steel rail manufacturer. Interning in such a prestigious company gave me great industrial exposure in the Industrial Department. During my 4 week training, it allowed me to familiarize myself with the SAP MM module and a department's supply chain. Four weeks of interaction with such highly experienced people in the field of manufacturing sectors in various disciplines helped me gain vast knowledge of the steel manufacturing process from scratch to finished products, constant supply of finished products or a wide range of manufacturing products even during the plant shutdown, their practical approach to the successful practice of 5S, the implementation of quality control processes, the creation of management control systems for cost analysis and optimal planning of the budget, design control systems to coordinate activities and production planning to ensure products meet quality standards, develop management control systems to make financial planning and cost analysis more efficient. This motivated me to once again explore the real-time scenario and get more detailed information, so much so that I did a second internship at "Vizag Steel Plant", which is one of the youngest steel producers. I had gained in-depth knowledge in the medium sized commercial and structural manufacturing unit. Here I learned about various rolling, turning and cooling processes in manufacturing. So long asthis is the youngest factory, I had the opportunity to learn about the most technologically advanced machinery and processes. Exposure to manufacturing practices led me to carry out a final year project using both the experience gained in the industry and various optimization techniques to find the optimal conditions of the various parameters involved during manufacturing. The exposure I got during my internship made me think about optimizing various factors involved during manufacturing, such as material removal speed and forces affecting cutting tool etc. it pushed me to research and seek optimal conditions. With this curiosity I worked on a project during my senior year titled "Optimization of surface roughness, material removal rate and cutting forces in turning Al356.2 alloy using the Taguchi technique". The design was emphasized by the elimination of repetitive experiments, the effective speed of material removal in times optimized for the alloy. In this project, our team worked from preparing the alloy and molding it into a cylindrical rod to using a center lathe to turn the metal rod. Through this project, I gained real-time experience of producing a product and collecting data related to various cutting parameters and analyzing the data using MINITAB 17 software which in turn led me to learn about this application . This helped me provide a detailed analysis of the complex solution by validating the results using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the percentage contribution of each parameter. After completing my graduation, I started working for a multinational organization Accenture Solution Pvt. Ltd. for around 26 months as a Quality Assurance Analyst with expertise in Capital Markets and Financial Services. I work hard in a software industry, which did not place any limitations in the application of my skills acquired during my degree. I have worked for various roles starting from requirement analysis to delivery of quality product without any loss of defects. I need to prepare datasets used to test quality that include both positive and negative scenarios. This helped me implement the skills I acquired in topics such as quality control, data sampling tools and methodologies. I have applied various process improvement techniques by implementing Hybrid Agile techniques which are more suitable for the service industry, which has led to a significant decrease in downtime between development and testing and has helped me deliver quality results with better productivity . I had led a team of three towards automating the tool using JAVA and Selenium which in turn eliminated 10 day to 4 day repetitive tasks and improved process and resource utilization. The projects managed by my team allowed me to efficiently develop my leadership skills. I would continuously use all my professional experience that I have gained in the last 2 years in such a way as to benefit me in my university studies. I had acquired various skills like Minitab, ARENA (Simulation), ANSYS, Auto-CAD, C and C++ improved both analysis and programming skills. One of the organizing members of the "Optimization Reinvented" event organized by the Department of Industrial Engineering improved my management skills. Very knowledgeable in many industry tools used for automation during my work at Accenture. Tools like Selenium for automation, SQL for data retrieval and many data management tools.
