Because of my daughter's love of art, I decided to take her to an art museum. There I discovered a love for art that I had never had before. Edouard Duval-Carri is an artist and sculptor born in Haiti. Duval-Carri and his family fled to Puerto Rico while he was a child during the regime of François Duvalier. Francois Duvalier's regime is said to be one of the most vile administrations in Haiti which has killed more than 30,000 people. The regimes of Francois Duvalier and his son Jean-Claude Duvalier who ruled Haiti lasted from September 22, 1957 to February 6, 1986. From 1988 to 1989, he also attended the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris; France. Duval-Carri currently lives and works in Miami, Florida. All of Duval-Carri's works revolve around his abiding interest in the history and culture of Haiti. His culture and beliefs are boldly displayed in the exhibition. Duval-Carri is an Apollonian thinker and I myself have a greater appreciation for his art which I believe is represented in his exhibitions. Apollonian and Dionysian are terms used to define the two fundamental philosophies of Greek culture. These words derive from the Greek deities Apollo and Dionysian. I have an Apollonian appreciation for The Indigo Room exhibition because being from the Caribbean I know the history of Haiti. For me the acrylic squares are not just random in the exhibition, Duval's motifs and political opinions in his exhibitions are displayed, in line with Apollonian thought. This exhibition is a beautiful tribute and recognition to Haiti as the first independent black republic. Edouard Duval-Carri is best known for his traditional visual images, which address current social and political conditions. He used his work to demonstrate that Haiti is a multi-faceted country. Duval-Carri's paintings and sculptures reflect the culture and history of Haiti with strong references to the Voodoo religion. The Indigo Room or Is Memory Water Soluble was created in 2004 and is considered mixed media art. Throughout the room there are plexiglass boxes with assorted objects. The Indigo Room is located in a small room next to the museum elevators. This mixed media artwork combines bold colors and enchanting realism with references to traditional Haitian art, values, politics and Voodoo. Regular objects such as shells, stars, flowers and plants are implanted in the acrylic cubes, as are many of Duval-Carri's paintings. The bright, bluish puppies also contain personal items from the local Haitian community. I really enjoyed this exhibition and it was surprisingly a fun and interesting experience. Edouard Duval-Carri describes Haiti's history of brutality and violence alongside the country's beauty. Standing in the dimly lit room I can appreciate the stories being told and there are many more things to discover.
