Scrooge abruptly refuses his offer, as he does every year, and dismisses him by telling a lie every time he says Merry Christmas. We quickly see that Scrooge is not a very nice person and that he doesn't like Christmas. We also see that he is a very business focused man and has no interest in things that don't give him value. Later in the play, we see that Scrooge's wife left him because she only saw things as gain or loss. He says that although he may be sad for a short time, he will move on very quickly and consider it a loss. We also learn that he is a very wealthy person, but chooses to be very stingy with his money on several occasions. He sees children on the street dressed in rags and visibly hungry, asking for money and instead of taking pity on them and giving them money, he scares them. Additionally, Bob Cratchit, Scrooge's only employee, has a family of 6 that he needs to feed and obviously works very hard for Scrooge. However, Scrooge does not pay him much and treats him very badly. We really see Scrooge's true perspective emerge when charity workers come asking for money to give people a meal and clothes at Christmas. Scrooge is very rude to the charity workers and tells them that he has already donated to the soup kitchen and the prison. When the charity workers tell him that some people can't make it to either, Scrooge says to let them die and decrease the excess population. Needless to say, Scrooge had a rather bleak outlook on life. One night, after returning from work, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his old business partner who died 10 years ago. He tells Scrooge how he has to wear chains and constantly travel the world because he has lived such a bad life. He warns Scrooge that the same thing will happen to him if he doesn't change. This is the beginning of the change in Scrooge's attitude and perspective on the world. Scrooge is visited by three ghosts that same night, the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Future. The Ghost of Christmas Past takes him back to his childhood until his wife left him and we see that Scrooge wasn't always like he is now. He was happy and joyful, especially when he was with his wife. Scrooge sees how happy he was and how he has transformed into the person he is now and is tormented by his mistakes, which makes him full of regrets, even if he doesn't want to admit it yet. The Ghost of Christmas Present shows him the dinner that Scrooge refused to attend. Scrooge has a lot of fun playing, but then gets hurt when he is teased for his behavior. Here, Scrooge begins to see how people perceive him and it makes him sad. Scrooge also sees how fun life can be. The Ghost of Christmas Future shows Scrooge his funeral and the interactions that happen between people after the funeral. Scrooge is shocked and saddened because no one cared about him and most people were really happy when he died. After the ghost leaves, Scrooge promises to be a new man and to make amends.
