Ramirez had a troubled childhood that led him to commit these crimes when he grew up. He committed crimes that included rape, murder and burglary. He was known as "The Night Stalker", was convicted in 1989 and given several death sentences for the 14 victims he killed. Mercedes worked in a boot factory where she was exposed to many different chemicals when she was pregnant with him. When Ramirez was two years old, a dresser fell on his head causing a "laceration on his forehead." At the age of five, he was knocked unconscious by a blow to the head from a swing that caused him to suffer from epilepsy. Richard claims that his entire family suffered physical abuse from his father. At twelve, he was exposed to photos of Vietnamese women raped by his older cousin, veteran Miguel Ramirez. At the age of thirteen, Miguel shot his wife while she had a "little richie" as a gift. Ramirez dropped out of school in his freshman year of high school, soon after he was first arrested for marijuana possession in 1977. He later moved to California and turned to cocaine possession, burglary, and an interest in Satanism. In 1981, he was arrested twice more for car theft and once again in 1984 and during that time he began to get lost and unable to maintain his personal hygiene. Eventually, his burglary crimes failed and he began committing murder crimes. On April 10, 1984, Ramirez killed his first victim, Mei Leung, who was found dead in the area where Ramirez lived in the basement of an apartment. Mei was found by her brother, who said that Mei had lost her dollar and had gone looking for it. He went looking for her only to find her beaten, raped and stabbed. She was left hanging from a pipe, according to police. On June 28, Jennie Vincow was found dead in her bedroom by her son. His front door was open, the screens were off and living room items were scattered. She had been stabbed multiple times in the chest, legs, arms and neck. Her throat had been directly cut and she was sexually assaulted. Her dress and stockings were torn, but she was covered with a blanket. Fingerprints were taken from the window screen and were matched to those of the accused. Nine months later, on March 17, Maria Hernandez arrived at her home she shared with roommate Dayle Okazaki. She heard a strange noise behind her as she entered the garage, then found the defendant pointing a gun at her. As she raised her hand to protect her face, the gun fired towards her hand causing her to drop her keys and allowing the defendant to enter her home while she managed to get up and enter to find the defendant leaving. When she entered the house she found her roommate, Dayle, lying dead on the kitchen floor. Maria called the police and was able to identify the defendant in a police confrontation. Later that night, before midnight, Tsai-Lian Yu was heard by a manwho was in his house on the second floor and heard/saw Yu crawling and calling for help. The accused had forced her off the road with his own car and pulled her out of the car. She had been shot twice in the chest and was later pronounced dead in hospital. The witness was able to see the defendant walking away and obtain his license plate, he was able to identify him during the trial. On March 28th around 8.30pm Bruno Polo went to the home of the owner of the pizzeria he managed, Vincenzo Zazzara. He found the door open and called out Vincent's name but got no response, put the receipts it had originally been for back in their slot and left. The next morning, when Polo had heard nothing from Zazzara, he returned home with a colleague, and found Vincnet lying dead on his sofa with a bullet in his head. His wife, Maxine, was found in her bedroom with a sheet over her. Her shirt had been pulled up exposing her and her pants rolled up to her ankles, she was shot in the neck and head. She was also stabbed in the chest, abdomen, head, cheek, neck, in the public area and had her eyes removed. Many others had suffered the same type of injuries and deaths. On May 14, Billie Doi was killed in Monterey Park. On May 30, Carol Kyle was robbed and raped in Burbank, and survived. On June 1, Mable Bell and her sister Florence were bludgeoned to death. On July 2, Mary Louise Cannon had her throat slit in Arcadia. On July 5, Whitney Bennet was beaten with a tire iron in the Sierra Madre and survived. On July 7, Joyce Nelson was beaten to death in Monterey Park, Sophie Dickman was raped in Monterey Park, she survived. On July 20th Max and Lela Kneiding were killed in Glendale, Chainarong Khovanath was killed in Sun Valley. On August 8, Elyas Abobath was shot and killed at the Diamond Bar. On August 24, Bill Carns was shot in the head three times in Mission Viejo and survived. August 25, 1985 was the last night Richard Ramriez committed his actions. He was seen outside a Mission Viejo home, where he left a footprint, a witness managed to write down a license plate number before fleeing. His car was found a couple of days later, they were able to take fingerprints from the car to make a match and release his real name and photos to catch him. Among residents and survivors of the area, they managed to identify and arrest him on August 31 when he was seen trying to steal someone's vehicle. Tons of people helped defeat the serial killer until the police arrived. Ramirez waited as his route had been postponed several times. On September 20, 1989, the jury finally reached a guilty verdict on 43 charges, including 13 counts of murder, five of attempted murder, 11 of sexual assault and 14 of burglary. The killer was formally sentenced to death in the gas chamber on November 7, 1989 and was sent to San Quentin prison in California to spend the rest of his days. Richard had gained tons of supporters along the way, mostly people with satanic views. He went on to marry one of his supporters, Doreen Lioy, in 1996, and has also been linked to more vicious crimes. After 24 years on death row, Richard died on June 7, 2013, at the age of fifty-three, from complications related to B-cell lymphoma.
