Never Cry Wolf, by Farley Mowart, depicts a scientist's adaptation to the wilderness while searching for wolves. Tyler, who is the main character, learns to respect animal rights in the wilderness throughout the film. Before his adventure begins, Tyler meets a drunk at the bar who tells him to avoid nature, because there would be the only meat there to eat. Rosie, a forest pilot, takes Tyler into the wilderness and at first has no feelings towards nature, but later discovers that there is a use for and grows rich in its resources and inhabitants. Ootek, an Indian who looks at wolves in a particular and profound way, has a great influence on Tyler's development of respect for nature. Mike, Ootek's nephew, understands Tyler and follows his uncle at first, but ends up losing respect for wolves and nature. Say no to plagiarism. When he began his adventure, he quickly learned to respect nature and its inhabitants. After meeting Ootek, Tyler began to discover what nature was really like. Mike gave him the same impression as Ootek. When Rosie left Tyler, he pointed out that he had no idea where they were or what they were there for. He was extremely unsure of nature and what it consists of, and felt he didn't need it. When Tyler went exploring near the end of the film, he found Rosie and a couple of other kids camping and playing soccer by a lake. Once confronted, Rosie said she hit the jackpot and planned to turn the acreage into something fabulous. In the end Rosie had no respect for the wilderness or its inhabitants, but she was satisfied with it because it made him rich. The drunk at the bar obviously had no interest in nature, as he told Tyler that if he went out there he would surely be killed and eaten by wild animals. When Tyler met Mike, he had found a friend. Mike was an English-speaking Indian who acted as a translator between Tyler and Ootek and provided Tyler with someone to talk to. At first Mike respected nature as much as Ootek, but towards the end he lost all the respect he ever had. He wanted to get out of it and have nothing to do with it; able to leave nature behind and move forward without thinking twice. What we've seen when trying to compare and contrast these feelings towards nature and wilderness is that many people feel many different ways; yet certain accidents and time can change anything. Tyler went from uncertainty to full respect for wolves and their environment. Rosie went from not knowing what to do with anything to appreciating him very much for making him extremely rich. Ootek and the drunk maintained their feelings towards nature throughout the film, even though they were completely opposite. Mike on the other hand has lost all respect he had for nature, wolves and those who respected it. He ended up not caring about it at all, wishing he didn't have to deal with it. Each character had different opinions on nature and different uses. It's difficult to decide what is right, but we are all capable of expressing our opinions.
