It is the 74th edition of the Hunger Games and during the Harrowing, Katniss' younger sister, Primrose, is chosen as a tribute. Katniss disagreed and decided to volunteer as a tribute, becoming the female tribute of District 12 and saving her sister from the game. The chosen male tribute is a baker's son named Peeta Mellark who gave bread to Katniss to save her and her family from starvation. Before leaving, Katniss comforts her mother and tells her to be strong for Primrose. Katniss and Peeta are brought from their district by Effie. Trinket and trip to the Capitol. Katniss and Peeta later meet up with Haymitch in another train car and he tries to give them advice on how, if they want to have a better chance at survival, they need to make the public like them. Peeta waves to the crowd while Katniss does not. Katniss meets with her stylist, Cinna, who tells her that they need to be remembered by the people of the capital, especially the sponsors. Cinna says that someone as brave as Katniss should have a great costume for the parade where each pair of tributes wears an outfit that reflects their district's main feature. Katniss and Peeta wear black dresses with real fire coming out of them to symbolize the coal mining district. Peeta takes Katniss' hand and raises it in the air during the block for more effect. A tribute named Cato is stubborn and imposing, proving to be a possibly serious threat. Later, during a meal, Haymitch tells Peeta and Katniss about the Career district where Cato is from. All possible tributes train until they are 18 before openly volunteering to participate in the Hunger Games. Katniss focuses on Peeta again, describing his impressive strength, but he dismisses her compliments and confesses that his mother thought Katniss was the superior tribute. When Peeta is bullied by the other tributes during training, Katniss suggests that he show off his strength by throwing a large weight across the room. Peeta manages to accomplish the feat successfully and earns some respect from the tributes. Next, in succession, each tribute is asked to show off in front of the game's creators and sponsors, including Seneca Crane. Angry at the sponsors' attitude towards her, Katniss shoots an arrow directly through an apple into the mouth of a roast pig, right in front of the stunned sponsors. Katniss sarcastically thanks them for their consideration and leaves. Many tributes get high scores of 9 to 10, including Carriers Cato and his partner Clove. Peeta gets an 8 while Katniss gets an 11, the highest of all the tributes. Capitol President Snow turns to Seneca and tells him that the Hunger Games are about giving hope to the districts but that too much hope can actually be dangerous. During another meal, Haymitch tells Katniss about Peeta's decision to give up his help due to the fact that there can only be one winner. On the quirky Hunger Games TV show, each tribute is introduced individually and interviewed by the quirky host, Caesar Flickerman. . Katnissshe elicits laughter from the audience during the interview and impresses them by showing off her outfit that shows real fire while twirling. During his interview, Peeta devours the audience, getting a few laughs of his own. That's when he announces his crush on Katniss, which angers her intensely. Backstage, Katniss pins Peeta to the wall, demanding answers for his behavior. Just before the games, Haymitch warns Katniss to avoid the initial bloodbath by heading to high ground in search of water despite having to leave her bow and arrows behind. All tributes are injected with a tracking device in their arms as they travel by helicopter to the outdoor arena. The tributes are then taken underground where they head to certain checkpoints before being loaded onto platforms that transport them to the ground floor of the arena. Before being hoisted up, Katniss says goodbye to Cinna who said goodbye to her. Then she, along with the other tributes, is brought into the arena and the countdown to the Hunger Games begins. At the sound of the horn, the tributes rush towards the central cornucopia filled with weapons and backpacks, brutally attacking and killing each other. Katniss manages to grab a backpack and barely escapes Clove, who sticks a knife in her backpack. Once at a safe distance, Katniss finds a rope, an empty canteen and a coat inside the backpack. He takes Haymitch's advice and locates water in a nearby stream before tying himself high in a tree for the night and attempting to get some sleep. Loud cannon shots signal the death of the tributes and we learn that thirteen were killed within the first 8 hours. Katniss witnesses from her perch in the tree that Peeta joined a group of Careers during the night with the intent of leading them to her. While exploring the next day, Katniss gets too close to the outer regions of the arena. She is then spotted by Cato and 4 other tributes, including Clove and Glimmer who have joined. We learn that the Careers apparently come, collectively, from Districts 1, 2, and 4 who are trained illegally before volunteering to fight; this group of 4 people from two districts chase Katniss who eventually escapes by climbing a tree. Peeta suggests the group wait for Katniss to come down to get food and water. The group settles down for the night under the tree and Katniss ties herself to the tree to sleep. Her attention is then caught by a young 12-year-old girl in an adjacent tree called Rue from District 11. Rue, however, is friendly with Katniss and points to a large nest of tracker needles just above Katniss and dangling above the group of Careers below . Katniss manages to climb down from the tree and manages to grab her bow and arrows. As she begins to hallucinate, she sees Peeta approaching her and seemingly yelling at her to run. Regaining some sense, Katniss escapes but eventually collapses. After a night of hallucinations and nightmares, some of which involve her father, Katniss wakes up under the trunk of a tree with discharge bandages covering her stings. Not knowing who exactly helped her, Katniss stumbles, thinking it must have been Peeta. Rue must light small fires to distract the remaining Careers while Katniss detonates the explosive mines surrounding the mound. The Careers are distracted by the smoke from the fires while a tribute, a boy from District 3, remains in front of the cornucopia, keeping guard. Katniss then notices a female tribute unseen by the others. District 5's Foxface runs towards the pyramid of food and supplies, without the guard noticing. Katniss then shoots a bag of apples on top of the pile which causes them to cascade and detonate the mines. Katniss watches, triumphant, as the group of Careersruns back into the clearing. The District 3 tribute guard is equally confused, but Cato's rage turns him murderous and he snaps the boy's neck. Katniss leaves, disturbed by how easily Cato kills. Katniss finds Rue trapped under a net and frees her just before they are attacked by Marvel, a tribute from District 1. Marvel throws a spear but Katniss dodges the attack and fires an arrow into his chest, killing him. Distraught, Katniss tries to calm Rue and sings to her peacefully as Rue dies. Katniss then collects flowers from the forest and scatters them over Rue before her body is returned to her district via hovercraft. His neighborhood follows his rebellious example and destroys the stage where the plays are shown. As Katniss makes a peace gesture on camera, the "Peace Keepers" of District 11 arrive and shoot Rue's father dead. President Snow is enraged by the rebellion in District 11 and wants to change the rules and circumstances of the game to ensure that Katniss is killed. Haymitch pleads with Seneca to keep Katniss alive, providing a teenage romance plot as his main motive. Two winners will be awarded instead of just one as long as they are from the same district. With this knowledge, and having just heard the remaining Careers mention that they left Peeta for dead near the river, Katniss sets out to find him. He finds a trail of blood near the river and follows it to where Peeta is camouflaged among the rocks. Katniss helps move him to a nearby cave where they are well hidden. Katniss attempts to heal Peeta's sword wound but realizes that he has blood poisoning, something that can only be cured with special medicine. Katniss despairs because there could be no way Haymitch could send any as it would be too expensive at this point. However, as if by magic, the announcement rings out that there will be a feast at the cornucopia for all the tributes but, instead of food, there will be something that every tribute desperately needs. Peeta begs Katniss not to leave him or risk her life trying to save him. He asks her to stay and Katniss reluctantly agrees, even though she knows there may very well be a medicine in the cornucopia that could save his life. However, this hits a nerve with Gale who looks at home and is clearly in love with Katniss. Katniss waits for Peeta to fall asleep before leaving for the cornucopia. When he arrives, he sees Foxface running towards the supplies, surprising the other tributes with his speed and escaping without too many incidents. Katniss decides to imitate Foxface's moves and runs outside to get the medicine, but is caught by surprise when she is hit with a knife thrown by Clove. He taunts her with bloodlust and mocks her for teaming up with the "little monster from District 11"; Before Clove can slit Katniss' throat, she is picked up by Thresh, the male tribute from District 11, and thrown against the wall of the cornucopia. Thresh tells Katniss that he has this one chance since he helped Rue but, after that, all is fair. Katniss runs away. She returns to the cave with the medicine and administers it to Peeta and herself, healing their wounds. While hunting, Katniss hears a cannon signaling the death of another tribute. Panicked, she runs back to where she last saw Peeta. In a mixture of anger and relief, Katniss slaps Peeta, telling him that the berries are Nightlock and extremely poisonous. Katniss and Peeta run through the forest as two other dogs begin chasing them. They are chased to the cornucopia where Peeta helps Katniss climb onto it, barely making it up himself. Cato, however, is also at the top of the cornucopia and attacks Katniss, attempting to.
