My interest in civil engineering started early in my life when I first moved to the UK. I came from Africa when I was 13, and at that time the greatest engineering marvel I had witnessed was limited to a few buildings (embassies) and bridges, so when I moved here, my parents took me and my brothers to visiting architectural monuments I was impressed by those great minds who beat the odds and build these wonderful structures. Each of them is a testament to humanity's achievements and each is surpassed by the next. I have always wanted to create something great that would benefit humanity and defy logic, something that would inspire the next generation of engineers. I soon realized that civil engineering was the path to choose because I was good at both mathematics and physics and I enjoyed solving creative problems and turning an idea into reality. In college I learned to be more organized and not just lead others, but work with them. In the first years I was Deputy Student Representative and during my graduation year I became Student Representative. I was also trying to organize a charity event at school before I graduated. These interests in both community and the environment stem from my desire to make a change – that same desire underlies my interest in civil engineering. Achieving a first class at the graduate level is a testament to my dedication. After a structural design project in my senior year I became passionate about the design aspect and so I am applying for the master's degree with integrated design. My work experience is limited to on-site inspections in colleges and universities and for this reason I decided to apply for the part -time course so that I can work and receive adequate experience before graduating. Studying at UCL will provide me with the tools necessary to further my pursuit of success. Choosing the four optional modules will allow me to strengthen the fields I have less knowledge of and diversify my knowledge. As for my extracurricular activities, I am quite active as I am in fitness and martial arts which I learned during my time in college. I also play soccer and basketball, although my basketball skills are pretty scary and I need more refinement. I like sport for the difficulties you can overcome as a team. All of these activities taught me that there is a difference between losing and failing. As Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: what counts is the courage to continue”. I like competition and adversity because it fuels my desire to overcome difficulties and win. For these reasons, I believe I have the materials necessary to succeed in Civil Engineering. Therefore, to build the road I will travel to success and the tower I will use to reach new heights, I welcome the opportunity of the support and foundation that a UK university education can provide.
