During this semester of English 1302, I feel like it is much more interesting than 1301. In fact, I learned a lot of new things about the genre and how it takes on its role in society. I never understood why it really mattered, but it really matters. The first assignment I remember having to do was about toys and gender. After watching the video, I thought about it and realized that toy commercials really attack the specific audience they are trying to get. Growing up, I don't remember hearing a male narrate a toy commercial for a girl. I guess you can say as I was writing my response I had this little spark of an "aha!" moment as I wrote, keeping in mind the quote: “As a process, gender creates the social differences that define 'woman' and 'man.' In social interaction throughout their lives, individuals learn what is expected, see what are expected, act and react in expected ways, and thus simultaneously construct and maintain the gender order" (Lorber 60). The video and the quote complement each other. Society wants to mold younger children into who they are...
