Attachment Theory Attachment theory helps examine who we form relationships with, why these relationships work or fail, and how relationships help us develop in adolescence and adulthood. Mary Ainsworth stated that a child/infant needs a secure base from which he or she can explore the world (Bretheron, 1992). Ainsworth stated that a secure base is an emotionally rich environment (1963). He also formulated the ideal of maternal instincts that allow the mother to satisfy the needs of the child and with this ability the child-mother attachment solidifies. The Ainsworth methodology allowed attachment theory to be empirically tested and demonstrated (Bretheron, 1992). Attachment theory highlights the importance of a secure base, infants and young people. By connecting Ainsworth's attachment theory to Tashi, the protagonist of Possessing the Secret of Joy, we can summarize how the relationship with the person who cares for us can have a permanent effect in determining the direction of life. The three most influential relationships throughout Tashi's life were with Adam, Dura, and M'Lissa, however her mother's stoicism influenced Tashi (the primary care provider) to a spouse, with consequences from the mother-child relationship. Marriage normally increases self-esteem and provides a positive outlook regarding relational attachments. Even though Tashi and Adam had a burning sexual appetite for each other. Tashi still left Adam and Olivia behind. Tashi's mental illness interfered with all aspects of his life. The loss of a safe and sacred relationship with her sister and the way her sister died interfered with any relationships Tashi developed in the future. Tashi stated that "she went with Adam because he came for her"; as a result, Adam took over the role of secure base. Tashi says of Adam: "she married him because he was loyal, kind and familiar." A secure base is reliable, close, and meets your partner's needs. Tashi cares for Adam, but shows indifference towards her husband, except when she knows he is going to visit his lover, Lissette. The fear of losing his secure base becomes overwhelming. In the midst of his mad episodes, Tashi recognizes himself
