Indonesia's political landscape has been transformed almost beyond recognition in recent decades. During the period of a highly centralized authoritarian regime, power was concentrated in the hands of Suharto who held the position of president for over thirty years, there was no efficient segregation of powers, political freedoms were extremely limited, the military had enormous unlimited powers to interfere in political and other aspects of Indonesian life. The collapse of Suharto's New Order regime in 1998 marked a new beginning for Indonesia as a nation state. In the reform era, Indonesia has made significant efforts towards democracy. Its democratization included several imperative tasks. Legislatures and courts become much more independent of central governments. Indonesia has organized the liberalization and overhaul of the political system which includes the establishment of free and fair elections since 1956, government rotations, a multi-party system and freedom of the press. Indonesians now enjoy broad political freedoms. Meanwhile, countless civil society organizations and other pressure groups attempt to take on the responsibility of policing elected governments at the national and local levels (Nyman 2006). Another essential change is the implementation of a decentralization policy that emphasizes regional autonomy within the country as an indispensable part of the development of a more democratic political system. Most reviews regarding Indonesia's democratic transition have so far been positive. It is widely recognized that for the moment Indonesia does not appear to be in danger of falling back into authoritarian structures. Numerous researchers (Rieffel 2...... half of the paper ...... derably nationalist platforms control over half of the popular vote. On the other hand, Islamic parties have seen a sharp decline in public support since around 40% in 2004 to less than a quarter this year. The re-election of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is another stabilizing factor in Indonesia's political outlook. Having been president since 2004, Yodhoyono has demonstrated his extraordinary determination to eliminate public corruption. application of a nationwide anti-corruption program allowed his close relative, his daughter-in-law's father, to be sentenced to four years in prison by the corruption court, strengthened his credibility and paved the way for a landslide victory was elected president of Indonesia for the second time by voters, allowing him to continue his work in anti-corruption campaigns and public sector reforms.
