Topic > Compare and Contrast Mr Wickham and Darcy - 1961
Wickham makes sure to marry Lydia only for money, as he intended to do with any marriage. To convince Wickham to marry, Darcy pays Wickham's debts “which amount to much more than a thousand pounds, plus a thousand more” to settle with Lydia and Darcy also buys Wickham's commission (Austen 217). Darcy pays for Lydia and Wickham's entire wedding, after paying Wickham's debts and paying Wickham to marry. Darcy's character is strengthened by the fact that he arranges for the two to marry. He is involved in all the finances and duties related to their marriage until the official wedding; he goes all the way to their wedding, to make sure Wickham follows him
