A comparison between The Purloined Letter and The Black Cat In this essay I will compare the two stories, "The Purloined Letter" and "The Black Cat". The Stolen Letter is about a detective (Dupin) who is questioned by the prefect of the Paris police about a stolen letter. A prominent minister has stolen an important letter that contains information that may be dangerous to an important individual. No one can find the letter despite knowing who has it. Dupin had a past history with the minister, motivation to take revenge and also his superior intelligence helps Dupin recover the letter. On the other hand The Black Cat has a completely different plot. The Black Cat is about the narrator's descent into madness and murderous violence. , his love for animals turns to hatred, all fueled by alcoholism. After the narrator kills his cat, he has a lot of guilt on his shoulders. Having so much guilt, he finally finds a replacement cat, who looks like his old cat but has a creepy factor. The ghostly cat is the result of the narrator's final downfall, when he ends up killing his wife. The scary cat takes revenge when the police capture the narrator for the murder of his wife. The two stories, which have almost nothing in common from a narrative point of view, present some similarities in some aspects. First of all, looking at both story plots you can see they are two completely different tales. The Black Cat and the Stolen Letter have many plots, which is probably the only similarity between the two stories. The black cat has a violent and murderous plot… half of the paper… and the stolen letter all have a feature, which builds the detective type story, which is mainly about mystery. On the other hand, the characters in The Black Cats give the story a more creepy and disturbing atmosphere. There are no real similarities between either character in the story. Except that perhaps the mysteriousness of the Cat could be compared to the mysteriousness of Dupin. Furthermore, both of these characters have revenge on their minds. I think both stories are good, but they have almost no major similarities between them. This is probably due to The BlackCat being a horror and faster paced story, while The Purloined Letter is slower and more intellectual. Maybe the only main thing that is present in both stories and that is similar is probably the mystery in both stories and the thirst for revenge..
