Topic > Pros and Consequences of Nonsexual Victimization

Oudekerk, Farr, and Reppucci (2013) found that society exhibits greater disapproval of a relationship between an older individual and a very young adolescent. In contrast, not much concern was expressed regarding two individuals of very different ages, but still above the minimum age of consent. However, in a similar study Oudekerk, Farr, and Reppucci (2013) found that participants perceived that significantly older individuals (i.e., 27 years old) deserved harsher punishment than individuals who were less than 10 years older than their partner. Following the government's goal of “protecting” women from unwanted sexual acts, women interviewed believe that underage girls are exposed to greater risk than their male counterparts. How could this be true if females mature at a mentally faster rate than males (Oliveri, 2000; Koon-Magnin, 2014)? Young women truly face such a high likelihood of being emotionally, mentally and physically scarred by statutory rape and other sexual assault?
