The Pros and Cons of Gun Control: The Great American Debate An important decision-making opportunity about gun control has arisen in our country, whether or not we should be able to defend ourselves from harm with the use of a gun. Our Second Amendment states: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” With approximately eighty-eight point eight firearms per hundred people or approximately three hundred and ten million guns, the United States has the highest total number per capita in the world. This means that approximately 37-40% of families in our country have at least one gun in the house. The reason I chose the topic of gun control or gun2000 and July 2014” (All cities), liberals and many other Americans feel that there is a great need for greater gun control. They believe that the Second Amendment does not give citizens the right to bear arms, but only allows the state to maintain a militia. They believe it is the government's job to protect its citizens and that more laws are needed to control gun violence. Looking at these gun control advocates and how they are planning to enforce gun control, some may even wonder why we are contemplating the use of these mundane means. Some of these are; that of limiting the size of gun magazines and banning the use of assault rifles, mandating trigger locks and limited sales at gun shows. Ok, so we can see that even the Brady Bill has its limits, and how will these bills stop murders and criminals by regulating background checks, preventing mentally incompetent people from owning guns, and longer waiting periods before purchase of weapons. Also, remember that many of our citizens already owned guns before the passage of this bill and what will stop others from purchasing them illegally on our streets, remember that after all we are dealing with criminals and the mentally ill. This is just one example of how these banal means will most likely never work with our weapons
