In the book, yes, Tom is an arrogant, brutal man and a cheat, but he still has tenderness in his heart, when Mrytle is dead. He didn't immediately point the finger at Gatsby. Yet throughout the film, Luhrman portrayed Tom as a true villain; making Tom seem like the evil guy, when in reality we should be looking at Daisy's character. She's a gold digger. If Gatsby had no money, she would not have “loved” him or stayed with him for a single second. In reality, her character is shallow, selfish and she is a killer. She's not as innocent as everyone sees her
