Slavery is when a human being is treated as property. It is said that slavery ended in America 148 years ago. But is slavery really psychologically over? For this assignment I read “The Case for Repair”. Back in the day, slavery was used by whites who took advantage of blacks, to satisfy their needs, whether it was voluntary or involuntary. They used mental abuse and physical abuse as strength. Even though physical slavery is finally over and the government and people are against it, mental abuse continues to be strong and no one can stop it. Slavery may have ended, but psychologically, it still exists today. There are certain places in America, where white people take advantage of black people and mentally abuse them just because of the color of their skin. Even though there is no rule that says dark-skinned people should be treated differently, there are some non-black people who still do not fully accept black people and are racist towards them. Most African men and women, to this day, fear that although their body is free from bondage, their mind is not. They feel as if they are not accepted in this world, which leads them to change their physical characteristics. They change themselves just to fit into society. Most African women and men are manipulated by the media and society to be better and accepted. Mentally they believe they have to be white to be accepted, to have a better job and go to better colleges. In an article Mental Slavery, it states that “This very subliminal form of self-hatred or mental slavery works both ways. Once again, not only are prominent African American women modifying their hair and physical features to appear European, but they are now also if... middle of paper... dressing and acting like a white person in order to find a decent job. Most blacks have a way of speaking called “Black English.” It is the accent that most people around here use with many slang words, but during a job interview or for business meetings English is not used and is not appreciated for being used but instead society forces us to use correct English which is how white people speak. The way black people speak should be accepted as language because it is part of who they are. Slavery is not just physical, it is also psychological. Even though physical slavery is long gone, mental and psychological slavery still exists in America. For slavery to end permanently, people must change their mindset and stop stereotyping and being racist towards people of color and accept the fact that they are equally human beings as non-colored people..
