Some of these stereotypes may be due to them being in America illegally. Americans who do not have insight into the lives of these people think that they are all rapists, drug addicts, drug dealers, thieves and low-level people. These are all false stereotypes of migrant workers that we have seen in this film. Families travel to this country not to steal our jobs or participate in criminal activity, but to build a better life for themselves and their children. These stereotypes can lead to negative opinions and disrespectful behavior towards these people. This type of negative activity towards all migrant workers, or all Mexicans in America, is truly based on ignorance of the topic. As stated in the definition, sometimes stereotypes are true, and that's why they exist. The people who participate in these activities give honest, hard-working immigrants who just want a better quality of life a bad name in our society if they are not educated on the matter. The kind of negative treatment these immigrants may be subjected to could actually damage their self-esteem and self-concept. There is a long list of things that affect migrant workers' sense of self, especially in children, and this is just one more thing they have against them when they are simply trying to build a better life for themselves.
