Topic > What I Learned in Public Speaking - 802

Making a successful public presentation or speech in front of an audience was a very important task for me before enrolling in the public speaking course. I was always scared and very nervous. Since then I now understand the process of making a speech or presentation, including developing a topic and from this topic I develop the main points of the speech, research, organize my points, revise them, edit and make a great presentation to any audience. People in the audience might sometimes agree or disagree with my opinion or points, it was therefore necessary to clearly communicate my information to the audience without making judgments as each person was entitled to an opinion and different views about things. I also learned about different audiences and speeches, including persuasive, informative, entertaining, and special occasion speeches. I realized that whenever I gave these presentations or speeches, I had to do it with confidence, consistency and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that to capture the audience's attention and involve them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try to use images to convey the message. It was therefore essential to respect the diversity and cultural values of each person (Lucas, 2011). The course helped me learn how to overcome the fear of public speaking, caused by anxiety and fear, mainly due to lack of exposure. During this lesson I learned many ways to overcome this threat, the class groups that acted as audiences helped me in practicing and overcoming anxiety and fear. I also received a positive critique…half of the paper…information from several sources to support my arguments and was equipped with extensive research experience. My mind was opened to a wide range of diversity as a result of listening to many different types of speeches from classmates, some of which touched on culture during our classroom presentation practices. From the various practices we did I was taught how to use my voice appropriately in conveying my message, how to organize my thoughts logically and how to develop confidence on stage. In conclusion, when giving a public speech it was essential to leave time for questions and answers. This helped to know whether the message would be clearly understood by the audience and would be remembered. This section also allowed me to manage the question and answer section as some questions asked by the audience were thought provoking and required critical thinking.
