One of the first things a freshman hears or thinks of when he goes to college is the legendary "freshman fifteen." The freshman fifteen is defined as an average weight gain of fifteen pounds that occurs during a student's first year of college. This problem has affected many freshmen because it makes them fear they will gain weight when they go to college, but the undetected truth of this case is that many freshmen lose or gain less than fifteen pounds. To solve this ongoing problem, colleges and universities should incorporate healthier food products onto campus, provide student cuisine, and create fitness and wellness accommodations. It is clear that the fifteen-year-old freshman is a social and health problem. Freshmen hear about it in tons of magazines, blogs, and articles. Parents and friends constantly present the problem by telling them to watch out for the 15-year-old freshman. This problem is caused by increased amounts of alcohol, fats, carbohydrates, fast food and cafeteria food. It can lead to students being overweight, obese and having many health problems. Students have the freedom to eat when, how, whenever they want, and there is no one to tell them what to eat or when the freshmen should stop. Going to college is a significant change from high school. Many times, being in a new environment and balancing classes can lead to the quickest and easiest food options; these may not always be the best. According to The Huffington Post, a recent Ohio State University study that included data from 7,418 young people throughout their college years found that women and men, on average, gained about a pound and a half during their first year. . Less than ten percent of… half the paper… using the option, but they still need the incoming freshman to enroll. Many students may feel that the requirements and time required for activities and healthy living may distract them from their academic studies. The factors that lead to providing this option could end up in a bigger problem than its resolution. The legendary “freshman 15” can now be renamed “myth 15”.
