There has always been a stigma that if someone receives therapy or counseling, they are considered crazy by family and friends, which should not be the case. Typically, people need someone to talk to, but they don't feel comfortable doing so with friends because they may fear that it won't be kept confidential or that they might judge. I think the purpose of counseling is for people to overcome their problems or behaviors such as pain, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, etc. I don't think helpers should try to change clients or patients, but instead guide them down the correct path and try to reach an agreement on what we both think is the correct path or decision. As helpers we should listen and be able to listen to our customers even when there is a disagreement between differences in values, so I think we need to leave our values aside so that they don't interfere when we try to help customers. I think a helper should help customers to some extent, where the helper is not at risk either
