McCurry states that “I would define my work as visual storytelling rather than photojournalism. Much of my recent work has been filmed for my own enjoyment in places I want to visit” (1) However, his statements are not acceptable to me either. I found a video that is a TEDx interview of Mr. McCurry from 2015. The interviewer asks him his position on Photoshop, to which he replies: “I believe the image should reflect exactly what you saw and experienced when you took the photo. I don't think you should make any changes in terms of Photoshop - gaudy colors. I just want to capture life as it is without really interfering, and I want it to reflect reality, actually. (2) This is what he said a year earlier, so I believe this is his real opinion on Photoshop. “Visual Storyteller” is just an excuse he uses to avoid scandal everywhere. So, I believe those manipulated photos definitely cross the ethical line. However, I feel that he is sorry and guilty about those photos because in his statement he stated that “I try to be involved as much as possible in reviewing and supervising the printing of my work, but many times the prints are printed and shipped when I am away. I have changed the procedures in my office to prevent something like this from happening again.”
