I went to see Parsons Dance Company on Tuesday April 9th. It was a very interesting show. There were actually many different techniques that I observed in this performance. This company uses many different forms of dance in one technique, which makes it a unique company. A characteristic of the technique that I noticed in most of the pieces performed was the fast movement. Each piece was very upbeat and synchronized with the music. All their movements were performed following the accents of the music. In “Too Many Cooks” all the movements were synchronized with the sounds of the music. In "Mood Indigo" there were three duets and they all displayed different colors of indigo depending on how the dancers expressed their movements. The first duet was purple in color and they showed a couple in love and the movement was very fast. The second duet was light purple in color and the movement was very slow, this was the only piece where the movement was quite slow. Since it was a lighter color, they slowed down the movement, which suited the whole idea. In many of the other pieces the movement was also fast. In the piece "Caught", the technique here was about strobe lights. This piece was choreographed by David Parson and was very well done. They made the dancer jump in the air while strobing her to give the movement a suspended-in-time appearance. This isn't really a dance technique, but more of a perspective. It's not very often that you see someone suspended in the air for a split second. This is a very unique technique and many more companies should try it. David Parson is a genius at designing this piece.
