When placed in an environment with another adult, he becomes paranoid. He considers people to be "overly greedy banana fish" and assumes that a woman is staring at his feet, then calls her "stealthy" as he believes she was doing so in secret. “Seymour is literally fed up with the nauseating falsehood of those around him” (Cotter) and would react with a loud outburst which is unacceptable in a social setting. Although the woman protests that he wasn't staring at her feet, she is put off by his attitude towards her and quickly leaves. To Seymour, it must have seemed like she was embarrassed about being "caught" and it only strengthened her beliefs. Immediately after his release, he claims to have "two normal feet", but in reality he is very insecure about them for reasons most likely linked to his traumatizing war experiences..
