Lack of awareness alone can cause unintentional tension. For example, let's say the mediator is in a situation where one party has privileges and the other does not. The privileged one and the other are colleagues and both were caught drinking at lunch at work, something against which there is a strict rule. He wasn't fired but the other one was. The privileged man suggests that his colleague was fired “simply” because he must have done something to provoke him. The mediator could innocently probe further, if he follows a model that allows this, by asking “Is there something you did?”. This could damage the relationship, as the non-privileged party might see it
