Topic > Becoming a Better Reader - 1420

Some academic circles believe that reading is the most important activity a student can do to advance in academic research. Some research has stated that many people take reading for granted in their developmental stage. For this reason, few students fail to read properly because they say they don't like reading. In my observation, it is not only important to read effectively, but to read with understanding (recall of the text read) and for pleasure. Constant commitment to reading for pleasure could sensitize the desire to read. Controlled studies for people with specific learning disabilities recommend the SQ4R reading strategy to support people in learning to read. SQ4R could be considered a versatile literacy strategy that engages students in processing information before reading, during reading, and after reading. It could be used in all subject areas that critically consider content materials. This applies to all types of texts and concerns all sources of information. SQ4R could lead to a flexible reading scheme. Flexibility in reading is extremely very important. It is crucial to look at flexible reading such as reading different types of materials. Materials such as articles, novels, periodicals, magazines and newspapers could build different strategies and approaches that would suit different reading styles. The SQ4R method is believed to have the propensity to improve understanding and academic grades. It could also help students make meaning of the text in the following ways. Using SQ4R strategies before reading will help you preview texts and establish the purpose of reading. The more you refine the scope of the investigation, the better the depth of the research will be. SQ4R strategies while reading: they help to monitor and... in the center of the paper... underline the importance of SQ4R. They may use it unconsciously and claim not to use it. The good thing about the SQ4R reading method is that it allows for a better understanding of academic material. It also helps improve memory. A student is well equipped to focus on the specific area of research using the Q questioning strategy. The R for reflect/relate helps to bridge the gap between old and new information in the memory. A student will always have an accurate and current fact in line with the given area of reasoning. Ultimately the reading will encourage students to read the material for both academic reasons and for pleasure. Bibliography Forsyth, K. H. (2000).
