Topic > Social Support in the Movie Wit - 1773

These different factors play a role in how a person evaluates their illness. In the film Wit, cancer patient Vivian did not have strong social support and suffered greatly from the treatment she received. Hospital staff are very important in helping the patient deal with the dying process. Since Vivian had no friends or family there to visit her, the medical staff were the only ones to help her. Unfortunately, most doctors only feel the need to treat the patient, while the nursing staff is there to take care of the patient and help them mentally throughout the entire process. Death and the dying process brings anger and depression as one tries to deal with the reality of having a terminal illness. Health psychology helps people maintain a healthy lifestyle, in the hope that they will have a better chance of remaining disease-free. It also helps the treatment process and the healthcare system, in the hope of improving the quality of life of terminally ill people. The movie Wit showed the harsh reality of cancer treatment and the healthcare system. With the right psychological and social support, people will have an easier time accepting their illness and feeling at peace with themselves as they enter their final moment of death.
