In this segment of Health and Human Services lessons, the class learned the "Overview of Health and Human Services," which focuses on the basics for a variety of careers in the field. Lessons included: “An Introduction to CHHS,” “HHS Agencies and Organizations,” “Becoming an HHS Professional,” “Understanding Health and Wellness Frameworks,” “Interprofessional Training and Practice in HHS,” “Career Exploration in HHS” and two separate days of career panels. Due to the enormous amount of information presented to the class, many new concepts and terms were introduced. These included the different types of healthcare organizations, the many different and specific branches of healthcare departments, communication between healthcare professionals, the importance of putting the patient first in treatment, the holistic healthcare model, and the socio-ecological model. The different types of healthcare organizations can range from multilateral or global initiatives involving many different governments, to philanthropic organizations funded through a small interprofessional collaborative committee was the topic of an entire presentation and mentioned briefly in a few other presentations such as in, “Becoming an HHS Professional” and “Framework, Models, Theories, and Science of Health and Wellness.” In healthcare, the level of racial diversity in the system is appallingly low. Due to socioeconomic factors unique to many different races, it is difficult for African American, Hispanic and other minorities to have the same opportunities to receive health education. The high costs of attending universities, masters and medical schools allow entry especially to privileged students who come from the upper class percentile on the socio-economic ladder.
