Even though his ultimate goal of stealing the queen's son came true, we are still left with the unanswered question of why he specifically chose this child. In the original fairy tale, Rumpelstiltskin is portrayed as some kind of fairy and would therefore have some kind of mystical powers. Did she want this child because of the power he would inherit later in her life or did she want him because she knew from birth that he would not be a good king and therefore planted the seed of doubt to save the kingdom? Since it would appear that the queen had other children after her firstborn, there must have been something specific about the first child. Reasons like these explain why it's unclear whether to list Rumpelstiltskin as a good or bad character, just as it's unclear why he wants the character.
