African Americans are an unforgettable story that must constantly be told with certainty, except by sugarcoating what actually happened. Slavery, the path that leads to a capitalist and inhumane way of living that ended in war and bloodshed to demonstrate that equality was continually a war to achieve. They eventually get their emancipation and the civil rights movement. Takaki points to examples of how race is evident and why it is important for America to be formed. In addition to African American, Takaki also focuses on the Mexican race. It shows how Mexicans were eventually accepted and incorporated, however with issues that are still represented. With some similarities, Takaki illustrates immigrants and the races they are used interchangeably with. They are used for their work ethic, low incomes and desire for a place to call home.
