Topic > The Crucible by Nicholas Hytner - 529

This captivating film version of The Crucible is based on Arthur Miller's 1953 play. Nicholas Hytner did a great job directing this film. There are some flaws in the film, but overall it was a wonderful film. The first flaw in the film was the opening scene. The scene was supposed to be a night scene. But it seems like it was early in the morning. I think Hytner shot the scene during the day and tried to use night vision, but it didn't work very well. Another bad scene was when the girls were supposed to pass out in the classroom. The scene was poorly directed and acted. Bob Crowley did a great job with the costume design. They fit perfectly with the scenery and setting. The music was also a plus in this film. He always fits into every scene. The basic drum beats were synchronized right into the scene where Elizabeth is questioned about whether John is an adulterer. Just as he gave his answer the drum beat: "BOOOM!" The camera always seemed to be in the right place at all times. The cameraman captured every angle perfectly. He captured each person's reaction, like in the scene where John admits to being lustful with Abigail. First he captures Abigail's reaction to John's admission of this, and then he also captures Reverend Parris' reaction when the judge talks about the girls dancing in the woods. The lighting worked very well in Elizabeth's scene with the judge. Just before giving his answer, Hytner makes the rain disappear and the sun come out through the back wall of the classroom. It makes the audience think something good is about to happen, as if she is about to tell the truth and all the evidence is over. One character that stood out to me is Winona Ryder as Abigail. He has a lustful look. Her eyes show deep sexual passion whenever she looks at John Proctor. Ryder's appearance is very intimidating. In the scene where he threatens the girls, not just his threat, "...let anyone say a word or a hint of a word about the other things, and I will come to you in the dark of a terrible night and I will bring with me a bill punctual that will make you shiver.
