Self-esteem and confidence can be extremely important in maintaining happiness and a sense of accomplishment. Confidence is a significant element in the progression of success. Castells et al. stated that identity is the basis of a person's purpose and understanding of experience. He also emphasized that human beings enter the world and develop an identity regarding their gender, race, social status, etc. This identity progresses and grows through social interactions within a specific environment. (1) Social interactions can be defined as the possibility between individuals to express particular aspects of their identity within a specific framework. This interaction happens regularly without thinking about it; individuals comfortably reveal appropriate characteristics as they evaluate what communication is being exchanged (1). Bezzi and colleagues stated that identity is fluid and will change over time, but identity will never diminish. (2) Similarly, Goffman's theory stated that in the company of others, specific aspects of their identity will be highlighted based on the importance of the context and situation in which they find themselves. (3) Consequently, young people will view their identity as something that can be changed in reaction to both internal and external evaluation. (4) Profile creation is a deliberate presentation of a description of oneself in an online virtual format in which members adjust how they represent their identity to the various individuals with whom they may interact in the online environment. (4) These profiles are often represented on social networking sites (SNS), namely: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, YouTube etc. In addition to self-introduction, profiles on social networking sites are used to start conversations. .... middle of paper ...... teen stays connected and creates a sense of camaraderie with friends and family. A young person will be able to make new friends, sharing and exchanging ideas. Social networking sites allow the user to develop a deeper insight into themselves, their community, and a greater understanding of incidents occurring in the world. (9)O'Keeffe and Clarke-Pearson state that the lack of regulation regarding social media use among young people can cause an increase in: limited self-regulation; vulnerability to peer pressure in online and offline behaviors; sexual experimentation and sexting; cyberbullying; privacy issues, Internet addiction and sleep deprivation. (9) Obviously the negative impacts of social networking sites on young people may be more severe and lead to the question of whether the risks of using social media sites outweigh the benefits?
