Statistics contains the development of procedures and tests used to describe the variability characteristics of data, the probabilities of certain outcomes, and the errors and doubts relating to those outcomes. Some statistics are biased, some are based on belief, and some are false. A common misconception is that statistics provide some evidence that something is accurate. Alternatively, statistics provide a measure of the probability of observing a given outcome. It is easy to abuse statistical analysis to the point of error because statistics do not familiarize us with the organized or systematic error that can be introduced into data deliberately or unintentionally. There are many interrelated variables in statistical numbers that the individual analyzing the information does not perceive, and without further clarification or supporting data, an incorrect hypothesis may simply be assumed and the scientific data may be presented as fact rather than randomness.
