Imagine this, your job is to help people who die, then you are forced to send them back across the border. Are you "good" or "bad"? How about if you get paid to bring illegal immigrants across the border, then halfway through it's too much to bear, so you're forced to abandon them. Are you "good" or "bad"? Now imagine you live in Mexico and the economy is completely hit, desperate to help your family cross the US border illegally. Are you "good" or "bad"? Immigration policy has been the subject of profound debate throughout the American political system for many years. Like all discussions, there are different points of view and beliefs about who the “good guys” are and who the “bad guys” are. Luis Alberto Urrea's book The Devil's Highway describes the journey of the Yuma-14, immigrants who illegally crossed the border in 2001 through the Arizona desert; also known as the devil's highway. Urrea presents different perspectives on who the “good guys” and “bad guys” are in illegal immigration. The numerous groups featured in The Devils Highway support and complicate the debate over illegal immigration. There aren't always clear “good guys” and “bad guys,” but I agree on who they are. There are clear “good guys” in border control and clear “bad guys” in Coyote gangs. Then there are also those who could go one way or another, for better or worse, and those people would be the illegal immigrants themselves. In the novel we see that border control has a bad reputation. All across the West, stories are told about patrol officers. They are said to beat, handcuff, break ribs, use tear gas, rape and tie up illegal immigrants once they are found. All these things are just accusations and there is no real truth in them. These stories and rumors are passed from town to town along the border. It is thought that the rumors are continually spread just to stop people from trying to cross illegally
