South African Apartheid was an injustice because it was developed to impose prejudice and treat people unequally. Apartheid was a set of laws created in South Africa in 1948 after decades of racial segregation. Some people see apartheid as capitalism that relied on South African labor. Other people see it as a way to legally impose white prejudice and superiority on all South Africans. Apartheid increased the economic and political power of the white minority and was violently enforced by the government. It gave black South Africans few rights and poor living conditions. Apartheid ultimately tore the country apart long before Europeans found diamonds and gold in South Africa. This led to the European colonization of South Africa. In South Africa, war broke out between the English and the Dutch over natural resources. They soon came to an agreement to profit from cheap labor and slaves. The English and Dutch Europeans felt superior to the native South Africans. The Dutch East Company's use of slaves drove down the wages of South African workers. Then England emancipated the slaves and slavery was exchanged for segregation. Race began to correspond to class in the social system, with whites at the top of the system. Racist laws were established that allowed white-owned businesses to control workers and they were paid low wages. This system of work yielded large profits for white companies. After the First and Second World Wars, the African population in cities tripled. Most people lived in terrible living conditions, such as small, cramped shacks. More segregation laws were enforced and everything became more unequal. In the 1940s the Afrikaner National Party ca...... middle of paper ......C, the South African Indian Congress, the South African Democratic Congress and many others. One of the many acts of resistance was the Freedom Charter. It was carried out by the South African Democratic Congress, a white-led organisation. They went around and had the document signed. The Charter was for freedom from apartheid. In the 1960s, armed resistance began. Part of the ANC split and became PAC and many more armed protests began. Many people were killed and the government used a lot of violence against the population. Then a stalemate was reached which neither side was able to force into submission. Then a new president was elected. It has changed and reactivated many groups and people. Of those people Nelson Mandela was freed and a few years later became president. He began negotiating with parties and groups on plans to build a new South Africa.
