Although Dr. Jack Kevorkian was eventually imprisoned for murder, his euthanasia practices sparked interest in the idea of physician-assisted death. The general public consensus was that his actions were negligent due to the possibility that his patients did not actually want to die. Assisted suicide was born from the remnants of Dr. Kevorkian's infamy. In 1994, Oregon passed a law called Death with Dignity, which legalized assisted suicide. Although many people consider the law a social breakthrough, the implications that have emerged exemplify how assisted suicide is too complex to be legalized. In essence, Death with Dignity is a misnomer. Claiming that suicide is a dignified death is disgusting and should be discouraged in society. The main argument used by advocates to justify the act of assisted suicide is that patients experience an unbearable amount of pain, so much pain that their life is not worth living. To counter this, every life is worth living. Many people who use Death with Dignity fear the possible loss of function of their limbs, or becoming incontinent, or suffering until the last second of their lives. For this reason, a common misconception has been used as further justification for assisted suicide. This misconception is that there is a certain amount of grace in choosing when to die; however, there is more grace in accepting what is to come. Although supporters say Death with Dignity is not suicide, it is. Suicide is intentionally killing yourself, which is exactly the action Oregon doctors encourage. Furthermore, doctors who write prescriptions for lethal medicine are murderers because they provide the means of death. With all the suicides, there are endless possibilities that...... middle of paper ...... you must be 18 to file a prescription claim. However, terminal illnesses and pain do not discriminate based on age. A child can suffer as much as an adult, but he is not allowed to use Death with dignity; once again, the law failed. The prescription cannot be made more accessible given the ease with which it can be abused, but at the same time it must be more accessible because it eliminates a large group of people who might want to use it. With the legalization of assisted suicide, numerous problems have arisen. Doctors' ethical standards seem to be declining as they forget what exactly their role is in society. The shameless murders that are allowed to occur will create an inevitable slippery slope in which other crimes will be legalized. Dr. Kevorkian may have been jailed for his actions, but they may soon become acceptable.
