Humanity is equipped with at least five senses with which we observe and perceive what surrounds us. Although our senses, and sensory perceptions, are truly amazing, the knowledge gained from these faculties is sometimes misleading. The reason why our senses sometimes get it wrong is twofold, firstly the sensory organs we are equipped with are not entirely precise, and are not equipped to perceive and measure all information. The second cause of perception errors is that we all interpret the data we receive through our organs differently. As Penelope Fitzgerald says: “No two people see the outside world in exactly the same way. For every single individual a thing is what he thinks it is, that is, not a thing, but a thought. The combination of imperfect sensory organs, selective perception, and different interpretations of the sensory data we receive explains this “error.” For starters, our eyes don't "see" as clearly as we think. The real raw image that comes from our eyes is upside down, blurry and laced with blood vessels. Then, our mind corrects this image and fills in the gaps with what it assumes to be correct. However, our brain's perception of what is correct varies greatly. Nonetheless, the question assumes that our senses are perfect, which they clearly are not. I would say that it is because we only have eyes to see and ears to listen that we make mistakes; since we only have these faculties, our brains must compensate, and everyone compensates differently. Society is fascinated by the flaws in our perception, using them for entertainment and, more recently, in advertising. The advertising industry is able to manipulate images and words to create the desired perception of the product.
