According to classical Marxism, imperialism can be defined as "a stage of capitalism leading to political, economic and military rivalry and conflict among advanced capitalists" (as cited in Barrow-Giles, 2002, p.2). Furthermore, James O'Connor defines imperialism as “formal or informal control over local economic resources in a manner advantageous to metropolitan power and to the detriment of the local economy” (as cited in Roxborough, 1979, p. 57). Furthermore, according to Coffin, Stacey, Cole, and Symes (2010), imperialism is “the process of extending the control of one state over another.” By way of explanation, imperialism means creating an empire, expanding into nearby regions, and expanding your domain far away.
