Genetically modified food is a vital issue that affects us all. While most of us only care about what we eat and how food tastes, there is very little attention paid to how food is produced. To learn about genetically modified food, we must understand genetic engineering, which is an artificial way of modifying an organism's genes, which does not occur under natural conditions. Genetic engineering involves the use of recombinant DNA techniques, but does not include traditional animal and plant breeding or mutagenesis. Any organism modified by genes using this technology is considered a genetically modified organism. Between 1997 and 1999, genetically modified (GM) foods suddenly appeared in 2/3 of all processed foods in the United States. The reason was the ruling of the Supreme Court (a competent court in the United States) which allowed genetically modified foods to become a kind of marketable commodity. Since then, thousands of applications for experimental genetically modified organisms, locally or abroad, have been submitted to the United States Patent Office. Some of these organisms that will be subjected to the experiments are quite unusual. Chicken has always been a popular food among us. Many traders tried to find ways to genetically modify them in order to obtain better raw materials for their use. The popularity of GM chicken has increased significantly in recent years.
