The book immediately captures the reader's attention by starting with the rape and murder of fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon. The book is written from Susie's point of view as she watches from heaven as her friend and family's lives change as they try to cope with their loss. The story is set in 1973, in a small town in Pennsylvania. This is the kind of town where nothing bad seems to happen and everyone seems to be happy with their lives. All this changes after Susie is brutally murdered by her neighbor, Mr. Harvey, that is the real moment when the town's happy personality is destroyed. Desperate to deny what happened to her. Susie refuses to let go of her family, her friends, and her life on earth, which makes her afterlife very difficult. For a long time, her body remains unknown and the identity of her killer remains a mystery, which pains her even more, because she wants her killer to be found and punished. The pain of losing her daughter becomes too much for Susie's mother, and she leaves the family. Her father, Jack, refuses to accept Susie's death because he wants to know what happened to Susie, so he continues to search for answers and question each of her neighbors. Eventually both Jack and Susie's sister, Lindsey, became suspicious of their neighbor, Mr. Harvey. After realizing this, Mr. Harvey goes on the run, fleeing to a nearby town and trying to hide from anyone who might want revenge on Susie. Ultimately, Susie gets her revenge when Mr. Harvey drops a large piece of ice and hits him on the head, causing him to die. This book definitely meets the criteria of a Sebold novel. From Susie's murder and rape to the tense mystery mixed with the romance, the entire story screams tragedy. When Sebold was raped there was certainly a possibility that she could have been killed that night. The traumatic events that happened in Sebold's life changed his entire perspective on life and opened it up
