The West gave women the chance to develop, test their abilities, test new talents, and broaden the scope of their domestic and community service. Most women who traveled to the western frontier did so out of necessity, seeking husbands (if single) and new opportunities. Women were tasked with men's jobs as they traveled to the western frontier. After the women arrived on the west side, they discovered in many ways that the troubles were not over, but had just begun. Not all women who moved west were connected to a family. There were single women looking for adventure, or a change of pace, who were also eagerly migrating west. Unfortunately, there were also women who lost their husbands soon after arriving in the Midwest. Compared to the housing they left behind, they found these homes very different. During the journey the women learned to make do, which was starting to be a good thing to learn. As stated in the articles, much of women's work was related to domestic production. The women soon found themselves doing double duty. Typically in the early morning and late afternoon women plowed, milked cows, raised animals, and many other things during the course of a typical workday. But some women became teachers and writers or were already doing these things before the movement. Several women owned pensions. These same women were still the caretakers of the home and family. Although factories began to carry more products and necessities, women continued to produce the food, clothing, and products needed to live. They also made items and sold or exchanged them for things they needed for their family. They made the decision to do this because they didn't have enough money yet to get things from the factories. By fulfilling… middle of the paper… fulfilling these tasks, women had an influence on family decision making. Along with the suffering endured by pioneer women came advantages and freedoms that were not available to them back in the East. Pioneer women were responsible for creating and introducing new forms of relationships and behavior on the frontier. They took much of what they left in the east and used it to create new educational, social, and spiritual institutions to operate on the frontier. In experiencing new freedoms, some women were bold enough to successfully participate in politics, which was unheard of in the East. In the East, doctors, lawyers and teachers were men, in the West there was such a demand for professionals that some Western universities began to educate women. These new professionals have been able to do quite well at the frontier in such professions.
