Check it out. Walk the hallways, aisles, kitchenette, cafeteria of your company and pay attention to conversations, body language and facial expressions, production, quality and presence. Now report what you saw. Have you noticed how some departments interact more positively than others? Working for a successful company with numerous departments, it's surprising how some teams thrive and others struggle. Tasks and objectives can be different. However, the culture should be the same, right? The level of incivility made the difference. The relationship between incivility and mental health impacts an organization's productivity and cost efficiency. Stress contributes to an employee's mental health. According to the Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health, mental health “refers to the positive performance of mental functions, resulting in productive activities, satisfying relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity.” Increased stress leads to many complications such as migraines, back pain, neck pain and lack of sleep. Before I go any further, I want to reveal that I don't think all stress is bad. I believe it is necessary. My argument is that stress experienced almost every day has a negative impact on an employee's ability to produce quality work and work well with colleagues. I believe that high levels of stress affect everyone around the employee. An employee can take stress out on family members. This could cause tension at home. In turn, this will add to a lower level of production in the workplace because the employee is now dealing with extreme work-related stress and family stress. The cycle begins when the targeted family member brings that tension to… middle of paper… the business suffers. Again, this negative effect can be avoided if management recognizes the situation. Top employees may not be satisfied with their organization every day. However, employees who are happy most of the time with their employers will put in a lot of effort. They will come to work with a pleasant attitude. They will work to achieve their goals. They will actually care enough to produce ideas that benefit the company. Employees who are satisfied most of the time with their employer will be more loyal than the disgruntled employee will be. The old saying goes: “It's easier to catch a bee with honey than with vinegar.” Stress creates incivility and incivility contributes to stress. Organizations must recognize that satisfied and respected employees in a less stressful work environment will contribute to a successful and cost-effective business.
