Both Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwell's 1984 share the standard dystopian format of an individual against an oppressive or suppressive society, but they share their differences equally. Although both societies are oppressive in their rights, the societies uphold their common beliefs in different ways. The World State in Brave New World uses non-violent means to control the population and avoid uprisings. The use of hypnopaedia, or sleep learning, coupled with vigorous lifelong conditioning, can allow the state to install rational propaganda against the population. This use of rational propaganda, or convincing a population that something is in the best interests of themselves and the distributor, ensures that obeying society's expectations becomes a way of life and is something that can only be supported by the population with minimal government intervention. government. However, the state uses exile from civilization as punishment for those who go against society's ideals. While society in Brave New World refrains from lethal methods of repression, the government in George Orwell's 1984 builds its power on fear. Throughout the novel, the government holds daily meetings where the citizens are shown the enemies of the state and always ends with the phrase "Big Brother is watching you" (Orwell et al). This alone demonstrates the government's implementation of fear upon its own people. The idea that the government is monitoring your every move creates an atmosphere of anxiety and oppression. Not only demonstrating its ability to monitor its citizens, the government uses aggressive and almost always lethal methods to rid society of mavericks. For the "criminals", i.e. the enemies of the State,... middle of paper... of actions and fear. The government arrests, “vaporizes” and bans some things considered harmful to society. This is done to ensure loyalty to the government, while also ensuring that unjustified activity occurs and revolution does not break out. Contrary to this, The World State in Brave New World does not rely on action, as they do in making the inheriting population believe that everything they do is for the state. They essentially have no interest in things that are despised by the government. The population doesn't do something just because they fear the repercussions, but simply because they have no interest in it or don't see the need for it. The functionality of society is based on the voluntary conformity of the population with minimal government interference, while in 1984 society survives thanks to close monitoring by the government.
