According to the CDC, suicide is a leading cause of death among young adults. (Taylor 2008) Statistics show that there is a gap in gender difference, where men accounted for almost eighty percent of the total suicides in 2010. In that year there were 38,364 lives lost due to suicides. (cdc.gov). This is why it is imperative not to take any sign of a suicide attempt lightly. The nursing intervention is designed to prevent suicide by performing a mental health assessment and thus keeping the patient under close observation to promote his well-being, which will be discussed in the following summaries. Assess Patients for Suicide Risk Knowing how to intervene by detecting warning signs is the first step in helping prevent a suicide attempt. Being able to detect warning signs may be enough by paying attention to the way they talk, act and their overall outlook on life. If the patient is hospitalized, make sure he or she is near the nurses' station where he or she can be easily monitored by all colleagues. Make sure the room is safe. First, remove all objects that could be used by the patient and that could cause harm to himself or others and make sure that the patient does not have any medications with him.
