On average, Nevada casinos make about 11 billion a year. Granting Nevada a lottery would provide competition for the slot machines and table games currently provided by the state's casinos. If a lottery were introduced, it could cause a negative effect on Nevada's economy. Casinos help create a large amount of jobs in the state and having a lottery could potentially produce various businesses losing large amounts of money. This impact could be so colossal that it could cause local casinos to go bankrupt and Nevada's unemployment rate to rise. MGM Resorts International President and CEO Jim Murren says "How many jobs does a lottery create?" -. Nevada thrives on casino revenue. Gov. Brian Sandoval says, “It is inappropriate for the state to compete with our number one industry.” A study conducted by Thomas Cargill and Kambiz Raffie at the University of Nevada-Reno states that the California lottery has dented Nevada's casino business. Their study showed that fewer people visited Nevada in the years 1986-1989, causing Nevada's tourism rate to drop by 4.5%.
