Instead of vilifying fat and poor people, this country needs to consider the roots of our obesity epidemic. While obesity is largely biological and some people are more susceptible to weight gain, there are other ways we can address the problem of obesity without having to change someone's genetic makeup. We can work to reform the institutional disparities that make it difficult for people with lower incomes to maintain a healthy weight. A healthy lifestyle is not cheap. More nutritious, better quality foods are often more expensive and harder to find in poorer areas. One step in the right direction would be to encourage supermarkets to open in poor neighborhoods through the creation of tax incentive programs and the adjustment of zoning laws. The sad truth is that obesity affects both our nation's youth and adults. One way to solve this problem is to increase funding for public schools in low-income areas, which could result in better food quality in cafeterias and increased nutrition and physical activity.
