Guatemala CityI wanted to write my report on Guatemala City because I was born in Jutiapa. Jutiapa is in Guatemala. After I was born I lived in Guatemala City. I lived in Guatemala for 14 months. Guatemala is about the size of Tennessee. Mexico is north of Guatemala; Belize, Honduras and El Salvador are located east of Guatemala. Guatemala City is located in a valley in the central part of the mountain. The name of the valley is "Valle de la Ermita". In the city the climate is temperate, but from November to February the climate can be colder. The average temperature is between 22ºc and 28ºc (72ºf-82ºf) during the day and between 12ºc and 17ºc (54ºf-63ºf) at night. In 2009 the population was 1,050,000 people. In Guatemala City there are many different types of people, many monuments and many rich cultural experiences. Guatemala is a democratic republic. The full name of the city is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción. The city is also known as Guate or Guatemala by the natives. The official language is Spanish, but 21 different Mayan languages are still spoken. The major religions are Roman Catholic (50%), Protestant (40%), and other (10%) which include several indigenous Mayan religions. The main ethnic groups are 60% mestizo (European and Amerindian), 39% Amerindian and 1% other. Guatemala City was not always the capital of Guatemala. It was originally a small town that had only one monastery. The name of the monastery is “El Carmen”. “El Carmen” was built in 1628. The capital moved from Antigua to Guatemala City due to earthquakes. The earthquake occurred on June 29, 1773 and it was... half the size of paper... or it was small. Guatemala City is rich in cultural experiences. There are 300 galleries and in the museums there are excellent collections of pre-Columbian art. There are also many restaurants, shopping centers, squares, hotels, shops. Education in Guatemala City is good if you have the money to pay for it. In Guatemala City there are ten universities and many primary and secondary schools. Of all the universities, only one is public, the University of San Carlos. After getting to know Guatemala City better, I want to visit my home country again. Being able to see my culture and learn more about Guatemala City would be amazing. I would like to meet different people and visit many monuments such as Kaminaljuyu and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Guatemala. In Guatemala City I can also be surrounded by my people.
