Manny Fernandez and Dave Montgomery say we shouldn't allow guns on campuses because they believe not everyone who owns a gun is responsible and they care about the safety of everyone on campuses. Because their beliefs and values differ from those of early stakeholders, they tend to have different reasons and tend to cite different evidence to support their claim. For example, in their article “Texas Legislature Passes Law Allowing Firearms in Colleges” Manny Fernandez and Dave Montgomery make a major claim that stands in stark contrast to the position advocated by John Lott. While John Lott stated: “Firearms should be allowed in universities to allow students to defend themselves from criminals” (Lott, p.1). Manny Fernandez and Dave Montgomery respond: “Firearms should not be allowed on campuses because they put students at risk.” (Fernandez and Montgomery, p.1) And Manny Fernandez and Dave Montgomery further support their main claim with reasons that reflect their values and beliefs. To convince the public that firearms should not be allowed on universities, Manny Fernandez and Dave Montgomery explain: “Allowing firearms on universities puts students and professors in serious danger.” (Fernandez and Montgomery, p.1). And to demonstrate that “An armed society is a safe society, so whenever you have gun control, there are many more opportunities to become victims,” (Fernandez and Montgomery, p.1) remind the public that banning guns it is precious and worth protecting. The evidence of Manny Fernandez and Dave Montgomery also reflects their knowledge. When we talk about gun control, for example, we cite examples such as gun incidents at universities. And when they express their belief that guns should not be allowed, they cite "Criminals will not obey the laws. They are the responsible people we should be encouraged to
