And in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, Mrs. Dubose symbolizes a strong mind, the will and determination to never give up, and boldness. Dubose, a strong-minded person with “his own opinions on things” (112), has fought hard throughout his life for what he believes. He has learned a lot throughout his life and has learned to stand up for what he believes in. believe it and show how strong you are by showing it "...don't mumble at me, boy! Hold your head high and say yes, ma'am..." (110). When speaking to Atticus, she told him that she "strongly disapproved of [his] actions..." (111), yet she still manages to "smile at him... [and] bring herself to talk to him when she seemed to hate him so..." (109 ). He is able to stand up for what he believes in, but is still able to respect others and their opinions, except when he suffers greatly when he is without morphine. While he does not take morphine, he has attacks, suffers much anguish and torment. , but she resists, determined to beat the odds, to free herself from drugs, and to die "without being willing to anything or anyone" (112). He believes that someone must die without being wanted by anyone in order to leave Earth and escape the chains of pain. She may seem very rude and cruel, but without the morphine she cannot escape the pain and has to resort to screaming and behaving rudely. She has been in his bed, in his sickest moments, "her face was the color of a dirty pillowcase, and the corners of her mouth glistened with moisture..." (106), yet she was still able to fight.
