First, make sure you recognize the difference between reinforcement and punishment. To increase the desired behavior, you need to use reinforcement. Punishment is used to reduce unwanted behaviors. Second, when an adult begins to use positive reinforcement and ignore inappropriate behavior, some students may begin to exhibit behaviors that worsen. This anomalous behavior is called an “extinction explosion”. The student acts in an attempt to generate the reinforcement he uses to obtain from the adult. Third, teachers and adults should use positive reinforcement that can be obtained quickly and easily. Sometimes food is not accessible and inappropriate, so positive phrases work well.
