Rwanda, a small territory located in east-central Africa, is almost the size of Maryland. Many believe that the Kingdom of Rwanda was founded by European explorers in 1854. It was occupied by Belgian troops during World War I. On January 28, 1961, it became known as the Republic of Rwanda. On 1 July 1962 they established their independence from Belgium and from 4 June 2003 became known as the Republic of Rwanda. Rwanda has come a long way since its founding. Now one of Africa's largest regions in terms of population and economic growth, Rwanda continues to grow. Even though some say the poverty level remains much higher than that of any other region, it is still a place I want to visit. Rwanda is a beautiful country with huge mountains and deep valleys. Most of the countryside is full of prairies and plenty of farmland. The gap between the Congo and Nile drainage systems extends north to south across western Rwanda at an average elevation of nearly 9,000 feet. On the western slopes of this ridge line, the land slopes sharply towards Lake Kivu and the Ruzizi River valley, which form the western border line with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) and form part of the Great Rift Valley (Bureau of African Affairs). At an altitude of more than 4,500 feet, Rwanda's Lake Kivu remains the highest lake in Africa. However, the highest point in Rwanda is not Lake Kivu. Karisimbi Volcano continues to hold the record for Rwanda's highest point at over 14,000 feet above sea level. Even though the equator is about two degrees north of Rwanda, Rwanda's temperature remains around 70-75 degrees due to the elevation. Rwanda has two rainy seasons where heavy rains can occur and… middle of paper… punishment. Although it is not an easy task for a Rwandan refugee to pick up and leave their home, they do it and find a place in America. They leave all the bad things behind and look for a stable job. Most Americans have no problem quitting their jobs and finding another. A Rwandan refugee has many steps to go through before he can even begin the job search process. The jobs that refugees receive are considered inferior jobs by Americans. Most of them find work as hotel cleaners, restaurant dishwashers and assembly line jobs. These jobs remain more than enough for a refugee to feed the family, have a roof over their head and send their children to school. A Rwandan refugee isn't interested in becoming the next millionaire or driving a brand new sports car. Being able to take care of your family remains the top priority for a refugee.
